A Tranquil Island Paradise
One of the things I like most about Culebra is that it
has very little interest in tourism. When you arrive, no one's there trying to
sell you anything or pressure you in any way. You are simply absorbed into the
daily flow of this small Spanish island of about 3,000 people, 20 miles east of
Puerto Rico. The chickens, cows, and horses in the road testify to the slow pace
of life here. There is none of the hostility that is found on many Caribbean islands,
but also none of the phony ingratiation either. And crime is virtually nonexistent.
There is no part of the island I'd hesitate to visit at any time of night or day.
Although the island is Spanish-speaking, almost everyone speaks English. I prefer
to try out my Spanish, and the local people very kindly try not to laugh. The U.S.
dollar is the unit of monetary exchange.
There are a number of restaurants, some of them good, and
a few small bars, but Culebra lacks nightlife, except for an occasional fiesta in
the town plaza. Visitors are left to their own devices at night. At Casa Culebra
we usually cook the fish we've caught that day or go out for dinner, then return
to the moon deck for an evening of stargazing, bridge, conversation, and reading.
There is no light pollution, so the stars almost pulse in the night sky.
