Get there by air...
Getting to Culebra by air is fairly easy from San Juan's Luis
Muņoz Marin International Airport, the usual entry point to Puerto Rico from the
States. Two airlines---Caribe Air and Isla Nena---make frequent flights to Culebra
throughout the day from the international airport. Flying time is about 30 minutes.
If no flight is available from the big airport, Caribe also flies from Isla Grande
Airport, a small commuter field in San Juan. This involves a twenty-minute, $20 cab
ride across town from the international airport. A third airline, Vieques Air Link,
also flies into Culebra from the town of Fajardo and may soon be adding flights from
San Juan, as well. Air fare from San Juan to Culebra is approximately $100 round trip.
It is also possible to fly to Culebra from Saint Thomas on Caribe. |

There was a time when you could simply walk up to the reservation
desk and ask to get onto a flight. As Culebra becomes better known, this cavalier
approach can be chancy. It's advisable nowadays to make connecting reservations before

Get there by sea...
Culebra has regular car and passenger ferry service seven
days a week. The ferry leaves from Fajardo, which is about an hour's drive east of
San Juan. Isla Nena Airlines, Vieques Air Link, and Caribe Airlines also fly out of
Fajardo. The ferry ride over to Culebra takes roughly an hour. It can sometimes be
rough, so if you're prone to sea sickness, you might want to pick your days. One-way
passenger fare is a few dollars. Taking a car over is considerably more expensive.

Voyage is about 1 1/2 hours. The cargo
ferry also takes passengers. Passengers do not need reservations. However,
reservations are required for cars, and car should be at the ferry dock
at least one hour before departure. Schedules are subject to change and
should be verified ahead of time. Passenger fare: $2.25 per person. For
vehicle and cargo fares, call the Ports Authority. |
